A note is a small snippet of data within a research project, usually a sentence or two that represents one thought, punchy quote, or observation.

4 ways to create a Note

#1 Highlighting a data file

In the "Data" section of Notably, notes can be added to analysis by highlighting a snippet of text in a document, transcript, or summary.

While you are highlighting your data, you will notice each highlight appearing in the right panel as an individual card. You can imagine these are what your notes will look like on your canvas with your tags.

Once you are ready to move these highlights to your Analysis board, you can click "Add highlights to Analysis" to turn these into "notes" on your canvas/table.

#2 Add a new note directly in the table

Add notes in your table by clicking "New Note" at the bottom at the bottom of the table, and begin typing in the empty row. Once you finish typing your note press the [return] / [enter] key on your keyboard to create the note. From here you can use the [tab] key or the arrow keys to navigate the notes table to add tags/themes, or simply click in each section of the table.

πŸ’‘ Reminder: What you do in the table is automatically updated on the canvas.

#3 Add a new note directly on the canvas

Add notes to the canvas by clicking the sticky note icon in your canvas toolbar, then click anywhere on the canvas to create a blank sticky note.

From here, you can recolor your sticky note and access the note metadata to add theme, tags, participants and sentiments.

πŸ’‘ Reminder: What you do on the canvas is automatically updated in the table.

#4 Add notes via .CSV file

If you have data stored elsewhere that you would like to import into Notably, you may do so by importing a .CSV file. This is especially helpful when importing survey data, moving data from other tools, etc.

When you import the .CSV file, you can also include tags, themes and participants for each note.

Import a .csv from Analysis by clicking File > Import notes.

Note Metadata

To ensure good data hygiene practices, your Data is always connected throughout Notably. This means, always being able to tell where notes originated.

When you click a note in the canvas, you can use the note's menu to duplicate, edit text, delete, change the color and access the note metadata using the arrow icon. This allows you to see the text, tags, theme, participants, sentiment, date, and source. This data is also available in the table view.

If your note came from a video, this clip will also be shown in this section for quick viewing.

From here, you can continue to synthesize your data and begin generating Insights. Head over to our blog for more about research synthesis, tips, and templates!
